Many practices within Hampshire and Isle of Wight are participating in a flexible commissioning scheme, which offers extra NHS dentistry sessions for patients who require additional treatment after receiving care for an urgent dental need. The scheme will also provide routine check-ups for specific patient cohorts. Patients do not need to be known to, or associated with, the practice to access these sessions.
If a patient requires an appointment, the practice should be contacted directly, stating they are seeking care under the Additional Hours Scheme and state which cohort the patient is in.
Patients must meet the following criteria to assess stabilisation treatment:
- Patients have not attended the practice within the preceding 24 months, apart from to receive urgent treatment (e.g. unassociated patients that are not on the practice list)
- Patients who had an urgent treatment need and may have sourced their immediate urgent care from another provider but still require further treatment to stabilise their oral health. Patients should be encouraged to receive a full course of treatment to become dentally fit to avoid the likelihood of having a further dental need.
In addition, the following categories of patients can be seen, whether or not they have been to the practice previously and access routine care:
- Patients that are clinically vulnerable and require dental assessment/treatment to enable them to receive medical or surgical care, such as cardiac patients, cancer patients and immunosuppressed patients (this list is not exhaustive)
- Looked After Children (LAC) where there is a statutory requirement to have assessments and any treatment identified
- A patient that has been referred for orthodontic treatment by a practice that has since ended its NHS contract and who requires extractions before orthodontic treatment can commence
- Care home residents who can travel to a dental practice for an assessment and subsequent course of treatment, if the assessment identified a treatment need
- Expectant and nursing mothers
- Homeless patients
- Asylum seekers and refugees
- Armed forces family members
