The latest figures show that Hampshire and Isle of Wight is the top performing region in the South East for flu vaccine uptake, with over 600,000 people already vaccinated. However, there are still many people yet to come forward and with flu cases rising earlier than usual, the public is being urged to get the vaccine now. Those aged over 65 or in a clinical risk group are able to get vaccinated for flu.
New UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) data shows that the 2025/26 flu vaccine is already providing strong protection, despite the emergence of a new strain. It has been shown that it is 70-75% effective in preventing hospital attendance in children aged 2-17 and 30-40% effective in adults. High protection in children helps reduce wider transmission amongst the community.
Dr Michele Legg, Clinical Lead for the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight Vaccination Programme, said: “We are seeing more flu cases that are appearing earlier than usual. The vaccine is offering strong protection, especially for children, and remains the best way to reduce serious illness. If you’re eligible, please get vaccinated now to protect yourself and those around you, there are plenty of appointments available.”
It is safe to receive the flu and COVID-19 vaccines at the same time. Immunity fades and strains evolve so you still need this season’s vaccine if you’ve been vaccinated before.
The NHS 10-year health plan commits to a shift from sickness to prevention and the local vaccination campaign will continue to play an important part in protecting as many vulnerable people as possible before winter viruses start to spread.
For those who are eligible for the winter flu and COVID-19 vaccines, there are several ways to get your vaccination. Many people will be invited directly via their GP practice, but if you are eligible, you don’t need to wait to be invited and can book via the online National Booking System, by calling 119, or via the NHS App.
If you’re not sure if you or your child has a condition that means you’re eligible for the vaccination, or you need help with booking an appointment, then the NHS Hampshire and Isle of Wight COVID-19 Vaccination Helpline team will be able to help by calling 0300 561 0018.
Help reduce the spread of winter viruses by:
- Washing hands regularly with warm water and soap
- Covering your mouth and nose with a tissue when coughing or sneezing
- Disposing of tissues immediately
- Staying at home and avoiding contact with others if you have a high temperature.
