Gambling harm affects an estimated 1.4 million people in England and is now recognised as a top five modifiable risk factor alongside tobacco, alcohol, poor diet and substance use. Yet it remains under-identified, under-recorded and poorly integrated into public health systems.

This 90-minute session, delivered by Gambling Harm UK, made the case for gambling harm as a public health crisis. It examined the scale and distribution of harm through current data and evidence; explored how harm is actively shaped by commercial determinants including product design, marketing and easy access to credit; and centred the lived experience of those affected. The session closed by looking at what a practical public health response looks like, from early identification and workforce awareness through to system-level integration and prevention.
